ANCIENT EGYPTIANS used gold leaf on the sarcophagi and funeral items of the Pharaohs. Their production of GOLD LEAF has been recorded as early as the 5th Dynasty. The ANCIENT GREEKS used sheets of the gold leaf over wood, stone and marble sculptures.

ROMANS extensively used GILDING on public and private temples. They also embellished ceilings as well with gold leaf, making the process a popular luxury during this period.

The practice of GILDING once again became popular in Europe during the Middle Ages, on religious artifacts and manuscripts. During the Renaissance, both Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo used gold leaf in their art.
